The New York Yankees, New York City's baseball team, is undoubtedly one of the symbols of the city. The New York Yankees logo is the most famous sports logo in the world, and the team's games are always eagerly awaited events by millions of fans. 

During a trip to New York, discovering the unique atmosphere of Yankee Stadium and attending a Yankees game is a must-see experience – whether you are a baseball fan or not. In this article, I will explain everything you need to know about attending a New York Yankees game 🙂

The history of the New York Yankees

The team we know today as the Yankees was founded in 1901 under the name of the Baltimore Orioles. Two years later, in 1903, the club changed its location, remaining on the East Coast but this time moving to New York. The team then became known as the New York Highlanders .

The birth of a Great Team

At the beginning of the 20th century, the New York Giants (now playing in San Francisco) were the city's leading team. Very quickly, a true rivalry developed between this team and the future Yankees. In the early 1910s, the Highlanders moved to Harlem. The team's name was no longer justified and in 1913, under the impetus of sports journalists, the club officially became the New York Yankees.

During the 1920s, the Yankees made a name for themselves in the MLB (Major League Baseball), and managed to recruit Babe Ruth. This man became a legend in the sport and almost single-handedly made the Yankees a legendary team. To this day, Ruth's aura extends far beyond the world of sports, and he is still considered a true hero – and the greatest baseball player in history.

The entry in the Legend of Baseball

In the years following Ruth's departure, the Yankees were able to invite a number of great champions, most notably Joe DiMaggio, another baseball legend who helped the club win many titles – including four consecutive World Series.

After the war, in the 1950s, Mickey Mantle and Don Larsen helped the Yankees shine in MLB and make baseball history with numerous records. On 8 October 1956, in a game against the Brooklyn Dodgers in the World Series, Larsen hit the first perfect game in the playoffs. It would take 54 years before that feat was matched.

Thanks to these great champions, the New York Yankees dominated the MLB virtually unchallenged. The 1961 team, led by Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris, was even named the greatest baseball team of all time.

The New York Yankees today

After a few decades without a winning streak, the Yankees returned to prominence in the late 1990s and early 2000s, winning a number of trophies.

Today, the Yankees team is known around the world, even to people who do not follow baseball, thanks to their merchandise. Yankees caps are the best-selling caps in the world, and the baseball team has become a true symbol of New York in many countries.

Attending a New York Yankees game

The MLB is played every year from April to October, and teams generally play every 2-3 days. If your trip to New York is during this period, there is a good chance that you will have the opportunity to see one of the Yankees’ games. And if you don't know what to do in New York yet, this is an activity I definitely recommend!

The duration of a baseball game is not defined in advance. On average, games last between 3 and 4 hours, but the longest games are often the most exciting. The games are very lively on and around the field, and there is very little chance of getting bored.

All Yankees games are highly anticipated by a lot of New Yorkers, many of whom even have year-round tickets. So if you want to attend an MLB game, you'll have to plan ahead. Of course, the bigger the game, the harder it will be to find a ticket at the last minute.

So if you want to go to a Yankees game, you should buy your tickets online as soon as possible – as soon as you know the exact date of your stay in New York, even. Tickets bought online can be printed out directly, or you can choose to have them sent to you by post.

Ticket prices for a Yankees game

Prices can vary greatly depending on the match, location and time of your booking. The most affordable tickets can be found for as little as £10 (about £7.50), while tickets in prime seats for key matches can sometimes run into the thousands. As a general rule, you should be able to find tickets from $30 (£23) and even for prime locations, prices will rarely exceed $100 (£75).

When choosing your ticket, you can consult a map of  the Yankee Stadium which shows the different sections and their numbers. The higher the seats and the further away from the pitching staff, the lower the prices.

The good news, however, is that the Yankee Stadium is a legendary stadium for a reason, and you will be able to enjoy the game regardless of your location.

In my opinion, a good compromise is to choose a location that is far enough away, but practically in the middle, to get the most out of the show without breaking the bank. Also, choose a location that is more on the first base side, since that is where the vast majority of the points will be played. More generally, seats further away will allow you to enjoy the atmosphere of the stadium, and seats closer to the stadium will allow you to follow the action in more detail.

The Yankee Stadium

Historically, the Yankees played in Yankee Stadium on River Avenue, in the Bronx. This is one of the New York districts that you've got to visit on your trip!

The stadium was built in the early 1920s and was home to Yankee home games for 85 years – until 2008, when it was demolished.

The new Yankee Stadium is also located in the Bronx district, along the East River.

Opened in 2009, this stadium can accommodate just over 50,000 people for baseball games. More than just a stadium, the venue also houses restaurants, a museum and several galleries.

The New York Yankees Museum is located in the basement of the stadium. It houses a large number of artefacts and memorabilia from the team's history. Memorial Park on the other hand is a place that was created to pay tribute to the club's glorious past. There are also plaques commemorating all the great players who helped the Yankees make baseball history. This memorial is also accessible on game days if you have a ticket, until 45 minutes before the start of the game.

The Yankee Stadium cost over $2.3 billion to build. Much of the stadium's interior pays homage to the old stadium and the history of the legendary baseball club. The exterior of the stadium is also very similar to that of the old stadium.

Even on non-game days, it is possible to visit Yankee Stadium.

Tickets for the tour cost $25 for adults (£19) and $23 for children under 14 (£17). It is also possible to book online and get a ticket for a single fee of $20 (£15). Admission is free for children under 3 years old.

Some New York City tourist passes such as the Explorer Pass include a stadium tour as part of their package. If you opt for the Explorer pass, you can choose between 2 and 10 activities to do during your stay, and you can select the Yankee Stadium tour, among other activities 🙂

The tour takes about 45 minutes. I recommend it especially for true baseball and Yankees fans, who will get a real kick out of the tour.

Getting to the Yankee Stadium

To get to the New York Yankees stadium, you can simply take the underground on the B, D or 4 lines, and stop at the 161 st Street — Yankee Stadium station. As always when using the New York Subway System, you should pay close attention to the type of train you are getting on. To get to Yankee Stadium, be sure to take a local train (LCL), as the express trains will not stop at this station.

If you want to experience an MLB baseball game, you should get there early. Allow a good 30 minutes from the time you arrive at the stadium to the time you can finally get into your seat. It is also ideal to be in your seat about ten minutes before the start of the game, so that you can enjoy the national anthem and the fervour of the fans.
