Directed by Baz Luhrmann and starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, the 2001 film Moulin Rouge! was a huge box office success and won numerous awards – including three Golden Globes and two Oscars. In 2019, the romantic musical Moulin Rouge! was released and this stage adaptation of the already cult musical is now playing on Broadway at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.
In my opinion it's a great way to really enjoy the atmosphere of Broadway if you go to visit New York in 5 days!
The story of Moulin Rouge !
The screenplay for Moulin Rouge was written by Baz Luhrmann and Craig Pearce. The story is set in 1899 in Paris, in the Montmartre district, and tells the great love story between a Moulin Rouge dancer named Satine and Christian, a poet in need of success. Christian moves to Montmartre, the most creative and bohemian place in the world, with the ambition of writing a great play. He was hired by the painter Toulouse-Lautrec to create a great show for the Moulin Rouge. It was then that he met Satine, courtesan and showgirl of the cabaret.
But he is not the only one who covets Satine, and she has already been promised to the Duke of Monroth, who also wants to take over the cabaret. During their first meeting, Satine mistakes Christian for the Duke, and this confusion gives birth to a crazy love story...
