Directed by Baz Luhrmann and starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, the 2001 film Moulin Rouge! was a huge box office success and won numerous awards – including three Golden Globes and two Oscars. In 2019, the romantic musical Moulin Rouge! was released and this stage adaptation of the already cult musical is now playing on Broadway at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.
In my opinion it's a great way to really enjoy the atmosphere of Broadway if you go to visit New York in 5 days!
The story of Moulin Rouge !
The screenplay for Moulin Rouge was written by Baz Luhrmann and Craig Pearce. The story is set in 1899 in Paris, in the Montmartre district, and tells the great love story between a Moulin Rouge dancer named Satine and Christian, a poet in need of success. Christian moves to Montmartre, the most creative and bohemian place in the world, with the ambition of writing a great play. He was hired by the painter Toulouse-Lautrec to create a great show for the Moulin Rouge. It was then that he met Satine, courtesan and showgirl of the cabaret.
But he is not the only one who covets Satine, and she has already been promised to the Duke of Monroth, who also wants to take over the cabaret. During their first meeting, Satine mistakes Christian for the Duke, and this confusion gives birth to a crazy love story...
Moulin Rouge!, a great musical and romantic show
Recreating the atmosphere of the greatest Parisian cabaret during the Belle Époque on the stage of one of the great historical theatres of Broadway – that’s the challenge that Moulin Rouge! The Musical faced, and with success.
In all, discovering or rediscovering this mythical Broadway musical on the stage of the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on Broadway is an experience that is sure to mark your trip to New York!
Many of the songs from the film were brought to the stage and revisited, and a whole host of new elements have also been added, to surprise even the ones who know the film inside out. The choreography is just as grand as the one from the film, the staging, costumes and sets are splendid – everything is done to amaze the spectator and show him a world of splendour and excess throughout the show.
The music, singing, dancing and acting – all of it brings the audience on a journey full of humour, action, love and emotion, to spend a memorable evening on Broadway.
Moulin Rouge! is recommended for ages 12 and up. The show lasts approximately 3 hours, and children under 4 years of age are not permitted to attend.

- You will be sure to be able to attend a performance on the date of your choice – which will never be certain if you wait until you are in New York to buy a ticket for a musical.
- You will receive your ticket by email, in the form of a QR code, which you will have to present on your smartphone at the entrance of the theatre. You can also print the ticket, if you prefer 🙂
As Moulin Rouge is one of the most popular shows on Broadway, don't hesitate to book your seat several weeks or even months in advance. This may give you a wider choice of representation dates and a better seating location.
When booking your ticket, you can choose between seats at the side of the orchestra or on the first floor. You will not get to choose the exact seat, but the theatre will place you in the best seat available at the time of booking – so the earlier you book the better.

How to find less expensive Broadway tickets?
The only way to be sure you’ll get to see this show while in New York – all while finding seats at the best price – is to book your tickets online.
There are other ways to find much cheaper tickets, but you'll have to rely on your luck and take the risk of ending up not getting any 🥲
You can try your luck at the ticket lottery by clicking here. A few tickets are put at stake in this lottery before each Broadway performance – whether Moulin Rouge or any other Broadway musicals. The principle is simple: you register on a list, and if your name is drawn, you will be able to buy one or more tickets at a very interesting rate.
For Moulin Rouge, those drawn can buy up to 2 tickets at $34 each.
On the day of the show, you can sometimes find standing room tickets at the box office. They are very few, cost $50 and are only available once all other seats have been sold. This is a good last resort to attend the musical Moulin Rouge! if you didn't get a ticket and you cannot wait for another performance due to time constraints, for example.
