New York City is certainly one of the strongest symbols in North America. Known as the Big Apple, New York City is the continent's largest and most densely populated city with some 8.8 million inhabitants. If you are planning a trip to this always exciting city, you will surely need at least a week to fully soak up the atmosphere and discover its 5 famous boroughs 🙂

In this article, you will find several maps of the city and in particular the map of Manhattan – so that you will find your way around more easily the next time you visit New York!

The boroughs of New York City

New York City is made up of 5 boroughs – which are almost cities within a city, each full of things to discover. Located at the mouth of the Hudson River on the Atlantic Ocean, the city is separated into the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island – all of which will make for amazing discoveries.

The BRONX

The Bronx is the city’s northernmost borough. It is notably known as the home of the famous New York Yankees baseball team. But the borough is also famous for the Little Italy neighbourhood, its zoo and the New York Botanical Garden.

Manhattan

Manhattan is the most touristy area of New York, but also the most densely populated. This is where you'll find the biggest shopping malls, as well as the most important sites such as the Empire State Building, Central Park, Broadway or the MoMA.

Brooklyn

Brooklyn, less hectic and touristy than Manhattan, is the perfect place to have fun. Here skyscrapers give way to wide-open spaces such as Prospect Park and Park Slope, and trendy neighbourhoods like Williamsburg attract urban art lovers. This is also where you will find many trendy cafes and restaurants.

Queens

Queens is opposite Manhattan, separated by the East River. It is the largest borough in New York City. It is a borough known for being very cosmopolitan, where you can find several important tourist sites such as the Socrates Sculpture Park or the Isamu Noguchi Sculpture Museum. At the borough’s southern end, you can even try surfing at Rockaway Beach. If you want to sleep for a reasonable price in New York, I recommend looking for accommodation in this borough – hotels are relatively cheaper here than in other boroughs 😉

Staten Island

Staten Island is best known for its ferryboat aboard which you’ll get a superb view of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty 🗽  But the island is also home to a multitude of cultural sites to visit such as architectural monuments, beaches and parks. And if you like to shop, you can visit the Empire Outlets in St. George and enjoy the sights of Snug Harbor and Historic Richmond Town.

Manhattan is the richest, most densely populated and most touristy borough in New York City. To help you find your way around, know that Manhattan is divided into three main areas:

  • Midtown, where you can discover Hell’s Kitchen, Theater District, Midtown East, Chelsea and Gramercy.

  • Lower Manhattan (or Downtown) with Greenwich Village and West Village, Meatpacking District, SoHo, East Village, Lower East Side, Chinatown and Little Italy, Tribeca and the Financial District.
